The Lawyer Referral & Information Service (LRIS) is a program of the Maine State Bar Association that helps people who are looking for legal advice and representation under Maine law connect with appropriate attorneys and resources. Attorneys referred through LRIS charge standard fees for services, but do not charge for the first half-hour of their initial consultation when referred by LRIS. Personal attention makes the difference. Our intake workers listen carefully to the problems described by each caller, and then cross-reference several sub-categories of law to identify member attorneys appropriate to the specifics of each callers situation. This makes our service much more efficient than standard internet searches or going from number to number in the phone book. And if the first attorney we refer cannot assist, additional referrals are made with no additional charge. While not a provider of free legal representation, we work closely with the network of Maine's legal service providers, state agencies, and non-profits, and can often suggest other resources when referral to one of our attorneys is not appropriate or feasible. In addition, we are dedicated to increasing public understanding of the law and legal system, and routinely produce legal education pamphlets, information pages, and an Ask a Lawyer Q&A column that are available for publication and distribution.
